Hey guys! Really excited today to announce the first post in our new ‘Ask Tom’ series. In this series I’ll answer my favorite reader question each week and hopefully try to cover issues that a lot of you are curious about.
Before we get down to that I have a confession… this is not only my first video post in the series, it’s my first video post EVER! Scary stuff, yet something all vloggers have to go through. Just try and take it easy on me in the comments, and I hope you enjoy the content covered.
You may remember a week ago when we launched (happy 1 week anniversary to us!) we ran a contest asking readers to leave a question they had about blogging for me to answer as part of the new ‘Ask Tom’ series. As an extra incentive the winning two questions will not only be answered in the first two weeks of the series, but the winners receive a 6 month FanExtra membership. (If you’re not familiar with FanExtra it’s our network hub site, and offers over 1650 cool design/blogging resources – check it out if you have a spare minute).
The first winner I’ve selected is Chris. Chris asked an awesome question, and it’s something I know a lot of you are interested in. His question was:
“Tom, the site looks to be off to a great start and I’m sure I will be gaining loads of valuable content from it, as I have from your Photoshop blog. My question is, what do you feel are the steps to growing a blog to at least a few hundred visitors a day?”
Congratulations Chris, I hope that you enjoy your membership (I’m emailing you the details right after this) and find my video answer helpful.
The whole reason I’m doing this site is because I’m interested in genuine blogging, not shady ‘guru’ tactics. This video response is just me and my whiteboard, and a whole lot of information. There is no editing, and I pretty much just talk off the top of my head about the question posed. Oh, and as it was my first ever video post I did the most ridiculous thing I could think of in the intro to ease myself into things. Possibly a bad idea keeping it in haha!
If you enjoy the video it would be awesome if you’d subscribe to my Youtube channel. This is the best way to stay on top of our video updates.
As always if you have any questions at all or need anything clarifying simply leave me a comment below. I’d be happy to respond to you and try and help you out.
If you have a blogging question you want answered also please leave a comment, and I’ll answer my favorite question in week 3 of the Ask Tom video series.

Awesome video dude
You are really awesome ;)
Sorry for double commenting, but I had a question that is “How bad/good is creating a blog on a subdomain?”
I hope it is answered soon :D
Thanks for the kind words Aniruddh! For your question do you mean a sub domain as in blogs.fanextra.com, or as in hosted on a free domain (e.g.: yourname.tumblr.com)?
A hosted subdomain Tom
You always want to use your own domain, it appears way more professional than a free sub domain.
Tom, thanks for answering the question! THere was some great advice. I think the prelaunch tips are great. I signed up for your prelaunch and have been very much looking forward to the launch – so it worked on me!
I can also see where personal engagement is crucial, especially with those first visitors. Thanks again!
You’re welcome Chris! I’ve just emailed you with your membership coupon btw, sorry for the delay with that.
I’m glad you found my advice helpful. It was quite a lot to cram into a video and to be honest first video, I’m still getting used to the format of it all. Honestly though if you have any further questions about my points or need anything clarifying let me know :).
I got the membership coupon. Thanks Tom!
Thanks for the great video, Tom.
This video caused me to stop the publicizing of my blog because I was making the very mistakes you mentioned. I stand corrected and thank you for it!
It’s obvious that you know what you’re talking about, so I am now getting my first 30 posts together, trying to redesign my blog and then I’ll do a 2 week pre-launch.
All the best
Bob
Hey Bob. It’s really great to hear you taking such positive actions. I really hope it pays off in your blog launch. I’m not sure if you need a full 30 posts ready before your launch though. If you want to speed things along then 8-10 quality posts should be plenty.
